Yesterday, i had this debate with bing ming.. u know?? the super power swimmer dude?? ya... well, apparently, he didnt know that i was in choir.Once he got over the fact that i wasn's shitting him about my CCA, he guffawed at my cca, and called it gay, wussy and unchallenging... gosh... this bring back bitter memories of my acsi days....
Well, as all of u little boys and ghouls know that acsi, a.k.a (the snob school), is a elite methodist institution based on the teachings of Jesus Christ, the fruit of the spirit and our core values...
another point that must be pointed out is that ACSI is a jock school.... which means, that the sportsmen, namely, swimmers, ruggers, squashers etc, are placed at extremely high social standings in the school, compared to the more aesthetically based activities like say, chamber orchestra, drama and of course, CHOIR.... gosh... during my year as seniors, our president, got labled as the president of the faggots club... how gay is that man?
Everywhere in school, when my choir boys got asked what cca they were from , they would hesitate for quite a while before saying that they are from choir, the would rather cite their UYO... e.g, NCC (air, land and sea), scouts or sth of that sort.. (i mean, its so much better to march in the sun all day, and get dictated by your footsteps by commands all the time.. hey!! sounds fun eh?) this was because, in ACSI, choir is viewed as a "sissy" CCA... cuz pe0le say that all we do is just sit around in an air-con room and open our mouths.. how hard is that? plus the songs that we sing that are arranged in SATB format... gosh.. i blame this entirely on our Sops and altos.. especially the sops.. they embarrass us all the time... haha.. oh well... i guess some things dont really change eh??
The thing is, is choir really a legitimate cca, or an oasis out there in a world full of masculinity traits for the guys with a more musically inclined side?? Of course not!!!!! argh!! music and other humanities as aesthetics is developed only at a certain level in a society that is already self sufficient in the production of its own food and defense.... the arts, like music can only flourish when the nation is in a developed state. We should be be put above all other types of ccas in school!! cuz the stuff that we do, actually uses brains!! therefore, musicians are of a higher social standing than all the physically strenuous vocations... like ruggers, and seimmers.. i mean, in the ancient Roman empire, gladiators, the epitome of male masculinity(because of their courage and strength), get killed off almost all the time..
anyway, in a all boys school dominated by swimmers and ruggers, to show their surplus male hormones, they have to pick something to start suaning right?? what more than a group of people who meet twice a week and sings in painfully forced falsetto?? yeah.. that just about sums up the state of affairs when i was still ard acsi...
we are hardly even credited for our efforts as a cca la.. everytime a sport wins something.. say, tennis, the entire team goes to shake the principal's hand and recieve their awards in front of the entire school, basking in the glory of their achievement.. even teams who come in 4th in competitions also get the same treatment...
what do performance arts get?? well, the principal will be like goes to the mic after almost everything, and says: our choir/band/drama/chamber orchestra has won a gold/silver award in the recent syf central judging competition.. please give them a round of applause.. we dont even to shake his hand or to be presented in front of the school population.. then everyone forgets about us.... for crying out loud, please.... its not as if we are not as important as the sports teams right? every function in the school, founders day, teachers da, national day, it is us!! the performing arts who are the bread and butter of the function... and provide entertainment and purpose for it..
then there was acjc..
well, it was much better, perhaps we have a long tradition of choral excellence?? or perhaps the choir is really prominent cuz of the morning ensemble thing every morning?? or it just might be that we have the vp as our conductor.. haha.. i opt for the third option. choir in acjc is like music making by a school organization i have never seen in my life before... it totally rocks.... haha.. and people respect us for what we are, and we are good doing what we do best, that is to sing, and make music!! haha.. (and we win stuff too!!)
back to bing ming's thing... i guess the only excuse that he is the only person that comes up to me in school picking a fight with me over ccas and all, might be that,
1. He has been away from school for too long to really know stuff, and still stuck in his age-old view of that jocks are cool, and musicians are sissies.....
2. He is still in the caveman like thinking that musles, sleight of hand and a swift foot is all that is needed to stay alive.. ya know, the hunter gatherer thing?? ya.. haha..
3. He has just too much chlorine water in his head....
thats all i can think of now... i dont know if there is any other reasons, but they must be quite lame...
oh well, thats about all for this entry.. i need to sleep..
